Less logging in Taninthayi forests

The government will cut timber logging in forests of Taninthayi Region beginning in April next year, according to a local timber company.

To reduce logging in the region, which produces about 3,000 tonnes of timber logs annually, authorities are now planning to export finished wood products.

Mining, legal and illegal logging and clearing up of forest areas for development projects over the years are the key reasons for severe forest depletion in Taninthayi Region.

Khin Zaw Min, director of Dawei Minthamee Company, which has been producing timber logs in Dawei since 2007, said the new government policy eyes reducing production of timber logs significantly in the coming years.

During a recent trip to the region, deputy minister for environmental conservation and forestry directed the authorities concerned to work to this end, he added.

“This year, the government allowed us to produce 1,500 tonnes of logs,” said Khin Zaw Min.

Kaung Myat Company is the other company engaged in logging as contractor in Dawei, he added.

Talking about his company’s future plan in line with the new government policy, the Dawei Minthamee director said: “We plan to build a factory in Mitta Township. Our finished wood products will be exported to Thailand.”
