Sweden contributes $30m to 3MDG Fund

Sweden has contributed US$30 million (about K29.5 billion) to the Three Millenium Development Goal Fund in Myanmar, making it the fourth biggest donor to a program that provides health services to the needy.

Sweden’s contribution, for the period to 2016, signals a substantial and significant new commitment to health funding in Myanmar, the 3MDG Fund said in a statement issued on January 30.
The fund’s eight donors have committed a total of about $330 million for the period, the statement said.
Sweden’s support for health services in Myanmar dates to 2006 when it was an early supporter of the Three Diseases Fund, which had been established to help combat HIV, TB and malaria.

The statement said Sweden’s commitment to health in Myanmar was now firmly targeted at helping the country to meet the three health-related Millenium Development Goals.

The 3MDG Fund’s focus includes prioritising the delivery of essential maternal, newborn and child health services, supporting HIV, TB and malaria interventions and helping the Ministry of Health provide equitable, affordable and quality health services for the country’s most vulnerable people, it said.
The top three donors to the 3MDG Fund are Britain (which contributes $145.2 million), Australia ($99.2 million) and the European Union ($31.4 million).
