Telecom agency set to become independent corporation

The government will turn its telecom agency, Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications, into an independent corporation this year, according to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s budget bill for the next fiscal year.

The bill, which has been submitted to Parliament, will allow the ministry to extend GSM mobile networks and turn Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) into a corporation so that it can raise funds and seek financial and technological aid from international organisations.    

MPT partner Yatanarpon Teleport Co. Ltd, will be reconstituted from a private to a public company, according to the bill.

MPT partners Myanmar Telecom Co. and Yatanarpon Teleport Co. and one or two other companies selected by the Myanmar Investment Commission will be allowed to provide services on the extended GSM network, according to the bill.  

MPT will earn about 640 billion kyats (about US$740m) during the fiscal year beginning in April, according to the budget bill. Of this, 114.600 billion will come from SIM card sales and more than 522 billion from mobile-phone bills, according to projections in the bill.
