China Unicom to invest $40million in new Internet cable

Mizzima has learned of a deal that will see US $40 million invested in a fiber optic cable that will help to improve Burma's Internet connection. The agreement was signed at the end of 2012 between Burma’s Ministry of Communications and China Unicom.

“The current SEA-ME-WE-3 submarine cable will be upgraded and connected with the SEA-ME-WE-5 submarine cable system," said Htay Win, the chief engineer at Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications Enterprise.

“The internet fiber optic cables will be built first on land at the Muse-Ngwe Saung network and channel, before building a submarine network to connect with the international network," said Htay Win. "After building is complete, Burma will share half of these new networks with China,” he added.

Than Aung, a retired official from the Telecommunications Ministry said that after building new SEA-ME-WE 5 network cable, Burma will be connected with the international network via China, providing an extra gateway to Burma.
